Literature Text

When a man looks at a mountain
It makes him feel so small
He spends his days with the knowledge
That he'll never be as tall

But we don't have to know all the answers
'Cause dreams don't ever die
It's not what you achieve, but how much you believe
'Cause you win when you lose if you try

Even though some hills are too high to climb
Wise men know you can't discourage courage

(*instrumental break*)

Fill your heart with the pride of an eagle
You don't need wings to fly
It's not what you achieve, but how much you believe
'Cause you win when you lose if you try

You win
When you lose
If you try
I sang this song for my high school graduation (which was on June 9, 2012). As you can tell by the title, my songwriter grandfather Ron Miller (October 5, 1932 - July 23, 2007) wrote this song a long time ago, and after seeing the movie "Braveheart" God knows how many times, in a way, I began to realize that this song really fits the film. Not only is it about freedom, obviously (*SPOILER* hence the freedom speech), but it's also about not giving up on your dreams and that like the movie says (*SPOILER*): "Every man dies, not every man really lives." Yes I know William Wallace was a real person (this movie was based off of him, but a fictionalized version of his life), but you could say that this song that my grandfather wrote does kind of relate to William Wallace's dream of freedom, and that like his (my grandfather) message (along with William Wallace's) says: "It's not what you achieve, but how much you believe. 'Cause you win, when you lose, if you try." I know some people may not like Mel Gibson anymore (I won't go into further details why because I don't want to offend anyone), but "Braveheart" is definitely an inspirational film; particularly William Wallace himself, and it changed my life forever, and despite all the negativity surrounding Mel Gibson's personal life, you can't deny the fact that he's a great actor/director. Had I not seen "Braveheart", I would have never known about it, or about William Wallace. In fact, one day, when I get married and have kids of my own, I want to name one of my sons (depending how many children I'll have) after William. Anyway, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Mel Gibson, for making such a wonderful and inspiring film like "Braveheart." Even to this day (especially since my childhood), it remains as my #1 favorite movie of all-time as well as my #1 favorite Mel Gibson movie. I know some people think it shouldn't have won its Oscars (including Best Pictures; mainly because of Mel Gibson and its historical inaccuracies), but I think it deserved it. If you haven't seen "Braveheart," please go check it out. I highly recommend it. :D Lastly, thank you, Grandpa, and thank you, William Wallace, for teaching me to never give up, and to stand up for what I believe in (including freedom). William Wallace, even after your death in 1305, I still believe that your dream of freedom will never die. You and my grandfather will always be my role models (along with Naruto Uzumaki from my favorite anime/manga series "Naruto"). ^_^

"Every man dies, not every man really lives." "They may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!" ~ William Wallace, "Braveheart."
"It's not what you achieve, but how much you believe. 'Cause you win, when you lose, if you try." ~ Ron Miller (October 5, 1932 - July 23, 2007), legendary songwriter, but also my grandfather.

P.S. Here's a letter that my grandfather wrote for me on the day I was born.

"May 11, 1994.

To My Granddaughter,

Welcome to the planet life. Your Mommy & Daddy have created something very special and wonderful – you. They had a lot of help from God, and an unexplainable force called Love.

Love is everywhere around you and the one thing that will bring the most happiness to your life.

As the days go by, you will see and hear things that will sometimes make you believe this isn't true. What you must always remember my beautiful Angelique, is that much of the beauty and truth in life is not in what we see, but often in what we don't see – but believe.

For every tear, there are a hundred smiles. For every broken heart, there are a hundred new romances. For every homeless person, there are thousands in comfort and protection. For every cynical and angry thought, there is enough wisdom, to last through the ages. For every hungry child, there are many more, who are fed. For every fist that is thrown in hatred, there are a thousand baseballs thrown in joy. For every needle filled with heroin that goes into someone's arm, there are a thousand – life saving shots given to people, by people who care. For every orphan, there are ten thousand children with parents. And for every wrong, there are a million rights.

If anyone tells you, this isn't the greatest place in the Universe, you tell them to look for the things they can't see. Then say, I know about these things, because my Grandfather told me about them once in a letter. He said, they were things it took him a lifetime to learn.

If you find a tear on this page, it was shed with much happiness. I could not have written all these thoughts yesterday, because as true as they are, I couldn't see them, but today I know how beautiful this world is, because today you were born.

All My Love, Grampa.'

Well, hope you enjoyed this deviation. ;)

Disclaimer:
I do not own the movie "Braveheart" or the song "If You Try." "Braveheart" belongs to Mel Gibson, and "If You Try" belongs to my grandfather.
